"List of * characters" pages

Posted under General

Some or all "List of * characters" wiki pages, such as list of fire emblem characters and list of xenoblade characters, should have their contents put on the pages for their individual games.

The main reason is that having the tags on the page for the game makes tagging much easier. They should also be sorted by some logical order rather than alphabetically. Take post #5021088 and post #5107193 for example. I could tag fire emblem: three houses, use "related tags", and click on the characters that are in there. Easy as that. Can't do that when they're instead on the wiki page for something that isn't even tagged.

There's also just no real reason for the characters to not be on the game wiki pages. Yeah, it makes the wiki pages long, but their whole point is to provide information. Without them, most of those pages are barebone and nearly pointless.

Using the "Related tags" button on a tag with a wiki that links to a "list of _____ characters" also bring up that one, in case you didn't know.

That doesn't work very well when the wiki page doesn't actually link the the list of characters page, as is the case right now. They're also sorted by alphabetical order instead of by house, which would make it unwieldy to use even if it was in.

Usually when i make list of * characters pages and the list of character tags is large, I try to sort them a little.
There's no harm in adding sub-sections. My best advice here would be to just fix something yourself next time, because this is just a fallacy that hasn't been noticed and/or nobody cared about enough to fix.

I roughly ordered up the FE3H section of List of Fire Emblem Characters, so you shouldn't have that problem anymore.

okay, i went ahead and did everything

Wait, sorry, by that I meant, ordering up the list of character pages tag, not putting everything under the copyright tag.
This also is because it makes it harder for names to be added - you'd have to update two different wikis.

then we should delete the list of character pages because they're useless. even if the list of characters page is properly linked, you still have to scroll all the way down to right game, and for a huge series like fire emblem that takes unreasonably long. also, you put like five characters into the wrong house.

You know, you can just type Ctrl+F and search for a specific character/game, or just use the Table of Contents.

you can't use table of contents when you're doing this from tagging a post, which is what this entire thread is about, if you cared to read.

and why should i have to do any of this when we could just have the characters on the game page?

It's not hard to open a new tab with the 'list of characters' while tagging characters in a post. It's usually better this way for the reasons Username Hidden pointed above.

opening a new tab completely negates the convenience of the "related tags" section at the bottom of the page. and what reasons are you referring to?

It was a quick sort, sorry.

I assume he refers to

But, taking a step back, I understand your problem, I agree with you because I've been in your same shoes at times, I just don't agree with your solution, because it would make it a pain to maintain (Fire Emblem would have all of it's characters separated in 14+ wiki pages, which would make sense because they are mostly standalone games, but what are you going to do if you want to tag something from Fire Emblem Heroes?), and it makes the wiki pages less clean.
After sending my last post, I asked on the discord if a feature could be added. I haven't gotten an answer though, so I'm just going to re-write it here.

My idea was to optimize the gathering of List of * Characters tags in a way where it would show first the ones from under a certain copyright tag.
So, for example,
- I click Related Tags on Fire Emblem: Three Houses
- The script gathers the content within, including List of Fire Emblem Characters
- The script goes through List of Fire Emblem Characters
- If a copyright tag linked there is the same as the one the script comes from, then show the character tags in that section (so, until another copyright tag?) above the rest.

There is probably a cleaner way to do it, but that was my idea. I'm not sure how hard it would be to implement, though.

Instead of working backwards from the "list of characters" wikis, why don't we just put all the character tags on the game pages, and then have the "list of characters" pages update themselves by fetching the "Characters" sections from the pages each game in the series?

That is, if you're still insistent on having the "list of characters" pages at all. I say we just kill them because they serve no purpose to begin with.
