New site feature: deprecated tags

Posted under General

PSA: A new feature has been added to the site, tag deprecation.

How it works:

  • deprecated tags cannot be added to new posts, but they won't be automatically removed from old posts
  • tags can only be marked as deprecated manually if they're empty
  • tags cannot be undeprecated manually
  • two new BUR options have been introduced: deprecate tag and undeprecate tag
  • to be deprecated, a tag needs a wiki
  • two new mod actions have been added: tag deprecate and tag undeprecate, to monitor manual changes (only admins can undeprecate manually)

To manually deprecate an empty tag, go to the tags index, click "edit" on a tag, and mark it as deprecated from there. To deprecate tags with posts or undeprecate tags, please open a bulk update request.
You can also see a list of deprecated tags from the same page.

Updated

deprecated tags cannot be added to new posts

that seems harsh. New users may not try again if something goes wrong, but someone else could fix their typos. As the list of deprecated (ambiguous) names grows longer, you'll be rejecting some artist tags too. (if the qualifier's missing someone can fix it, but if the whole tag is missing it's much more difficult to source.)

If an artist name is ambiguous is gets renamed anyway.

A couple of questions occur to me. Why was this added? For what reason should a tag be deprecated? And most specifically say I have a tag that I know fits an image and I think should be added to that image's tags what should I do when the system tells me that that tag is deprecated and thus I can't add it.

What tag are you trying to add? In theory alternatives should be listed in its wiki page.

Usually tags are deprecated if they're subjective or if they're ambiguous terms that can refer to multiple different things with more specific tags already existing.
