Danbooru

Purpose of artist_request tag

That could be interpreted as "I can't read the moonrunes to know what the artist's name is" or "the artist's pixiv handle doesn't match with a tag on Danbooru".

If there doesn't exist one on Danbooru, I'd rather leave it to someone who can gauge what the artist actually goes by (since what's under the profile picture and what's in the URL don't agree at times) than to take a potshot and screw it up.

I don't think getting the name a bit wrong is really screwing it up though. If you just made a tag and got the name wrong then all of that artist's pictures would at least still end up organized under the same tag, with a name that's easily editable if someone who knows better comes along and sees that you made a mistake on the name.

Not making one generally leads to multiple pictures going under artist request, being left untagged, or sometimes being split between two slightly differently named tags for the same artist.

Fill out the artist page too please please please.

It's really trivial to move an artist page, even more trivial as of recent changes, and will give what I imagine to be a fairly good percentage of uploaders an instant artist hit. I know I for one will hit find artist on any post I edit just out of habit and replace artist request if something shows up.

This is what the forum is for.

Would it be worth making a sticky in the forum, "artist request"? I have come across images where hitting "find artist" gave me a big nothing. For me at that point it is kinda a dead end.

That generally doesn't work for names, but http://oldnihongo.j-talk.com/parser/search/ with "Proper names" checked off under "More options" is pretty reliable unless the artist prefers some sort of weird reading to their name.

Maybe something to add to danbooru 2 as part of the upload page? Ya a little off point but could be handy.

You can also do a search for source:*.pixiv.net/img/PixivUserName where "PixivUserName" is the name that appears in the URL of all images for that artist. Sometimes other images and a tag for the artist will already exist on the site, but because there's no wiki entry for it the Find Artist button won't work. You should create the wiki entry at that point so the system will start picking it up.

howto:pixiv has more details on what to do if no posts by the artist happen to exist on the site yet.

We had a thread for it already. I'm not sure why it died.

I actually thought about that the first time I uploaded a series with no artist and I did pretty much what the guide said. The thing that got me was the fact the artists username and his nickname were different. It ended up being his nickname that was correct but at the time I was not sure which to use.

After that I just decided that someone who knows better if they look at the image with get the artist. I didn't really think much about it until reading this thread.

I will make a mental note to do as you suggest (especially the wiki) since it will be helpful down the road.

I found that I have to edit the artist page at least once for it to pop up when you hit "Find Artist" (typically I remove the #######.jpg at the end of the url of the image link, and add the artist's main pixiv page).

No, don't make any wiki entries, please. A very few have useful additional information, but most are redundant regurgitations of the artist entry URL list that just make renaming/merging artist pages more annoying.

Why not make a wiki entry? I find it annoying when they're not made as it's easier to get to the direct link and artist's kanji while browsing the tag. It's there in the sidebar and I don't have to do any further clicking to get to the details.

Regardless of whether a wiki entry is created or not, DO make sure that the link to an artist's Pixiv profile is included somewhere. It's rare, but there are sometimes cases when an artist deletes all of his or her images on Pixiv that have been uploaded here but still has their account with possibly some other images. It then becomes more difficult to find if no one bothered to enter the link while there was a chance. Recording any kanji and kana names (or any other kind of name, really) found should be done too, particularly since I think there's no chance of it replacing other artist's aliases like it used to.
