A Question about Commenting

Posted under General

More than once have I been pondering about this point of howto:comment:

Do not post "funny" dialogues. Do not post comments with lines the characters in the picture are supposedly saying. There's nothing wrong with funny or witty comments, but those are neither.

At least if this rule is interpreted strictly, I have broken against it sometimes.

It often happens that a good illustration has a very strong influence on me, immediately inspiring a mini-fanfic in my head. When that happens, I very much feel like posting "lines the characters in the picture are supposedly saying", but my main goal is not to be "funny or witty". What I am trying to do is share my interpretation of the picture in a concise way, possibly encouraging others to present theirs or to review mine. (Not like I have been very good at it, but neither have I received negative feedback; see under post #731732 & post #677175).

(EDIT: Wait, under post #677175 it is as much joking around with other members as commenting the pic. My bad.)

Please let me know if I should just keep such ideas to myself.

Also, I may have posted "funny" lines or silly one-liners when I see a connection with a meme (see at least under post #756331). In those cases, I have been interested in whether others might see the same connection. At worst, mentioning a meme may lead to a series of meaningless one-liners; at best, it may lead to fruitful cross-cultural discussions (see under post #889365, where I have not participated).

I think that rule is there to keep it down to a dull roar and to avoid the "erin erin" (post #531322) stuff that has happened in the past.

That is what I have been thinking, but recently there have been some more voices for "comments are strictly for business". Which might be a good idea, since so very many are being posted every day. I do not have a clear preference here.

My feeling on the subject as an analogy

The forum is a high powered office meeting room, the comments section is the lounge after.

Basically the comments section is not totally laid back but not too serious either.

The rule exists to stop morons from posting aggressively unfunny roleplay dialogue, which is, for some reason, something morons seem to really enjoy posting (behind "DAT ASS" and "id like to fcuk her ne1 agree?!?!!", of course). Given that you are not a moron, you're probably in the clear.

It's like the ToS rules for posts, really; the purpose is not blanket exclusion, it's to make you think twice about how funny/witty/deep your comment really is. I've posted comments that broke the 'letter of the law' several times, but I've not posted several as well, because considering whether or not people were going to complain about rule-breaking led me to realize that they were actually pretty dumb comments in the first place. Use your judgement.

really, just post comments that you feel fit with the image your commenting on, and others would reply to and carry on a conversation, without getting sidetracked or completely missing the point of the image.
