Danbooru

On DeviantART and sources

Posted under General

I usually upload directly from DA by linking the image source rather than the viewing page, but heard that the Find Artist function doesn't work unless you use the latter.

Is that correct? Should I simply change it after uploading, then?
EDIT: ah, forum #62605 says yes, I'll assume it still holds until further notice

What's further annoying is the way dA's gone a step past even YouTube's weird URL setup (not that Danbooru's immune, what with the tag string).

This is the form I would use:
http://djvenom.deviantart.com/art/Dat-forhead-170764933

This is what viewing the page from the gallery gets:
http://djvenom.deviantart.com/gallery/?q=forehead#/d2to32d

And just checking it, there's even a form for getting to it from your favourites that uses your username at the front! Oy...

i was on my way on correcting dA sources when i encountered post #1061076. i was supposed to change the *deviantart.net* to *deviantart.com/art/* .

however, i noticed a significant difference in resolution from the uploaded and the one at dA (at least what the Details panel at the dA page says).

the uploaded version and the dA link tell the resolution is 1024x1311. but the Details page says it's 2000×2560 and 2.5 MB in size.

should i still correct the source field? and is there a way to download the larger version? thanks.

There's supposed to be a "Download" link, which allows you to download the full image. However, artists can apparently disable this option when uploading. Considering that I can't see said link, I assume that's what the artist did.

ok, it seems we can't do something about it other than replace the direct link into a viewing page for the benefit of the find artist feature.

along the way, i noticed deviantart uses some of these notations:

  • *deviantart.net/* (as explained by jjj14)
  • *deviantart.com/deviation/*
  • *fav.me/*
  • *deviantart.com/art/*
  • *deviantart.com/*#/*

some may need corrections. first is a direct link. the second and third redirect to the desirable fourth notation. the fifth in its barest form of *deviantart.com/#/* is shorter than the fourth and offers the same viewing page.

the third is the shortest, but may pose problems to the find artist function.

i don't exactly get how the find artist works, but i would guess the artist/username/identification must be both prevent in the url and located before the dot extension of file type?

if that's the case, the fourth and fifth notations are acceptable, with the possibility of the fifth shorter (when the random strings are truncated).

however the fourth is more descriptive.

examples:

there's an additional (direct link) one, if the download button is present:

i'll just ask if the fourth one is the more preferred way for the sake of uniformity and consistency without hurting the find artist feature before i make some changes. thanks.

Having just uploaded post #1169384 from Deviantart, something about this process is confusing me.

I see a 1920x1200 size version available for download. Uploading the image via linking to it gets a 1280x800 version. Is the full size not available from simply linking? Am I supposed to download the full size image, save it, and upload it from my computer, and then manually add the proper source?

EDIT: Gah, never mind, I just made a totally boneheaded mistake. I linked to the download version last time I uploaded and didn't do that this time, having gotten confused by the find artist function not working on the download link.
