New Pool: Golden Comments

Posted under General

I am curious - is there any restriction on creating a pool that can house pictures that have an awesome comment "thread," such as hilarious comments, witty comments or fantastic discussions? I think it would be such a great addition to be able to look up some of the pictures that have awesome comment sections and have a good laugh by treasuring the best of the best comments that make up the Danbooru community.

What are your thoughts?

Yes, there is. It's been suggested multiple times and it won't work because it will just lead to people competing to create THE GREATEST COMMENT EVER and clog the comments section of every post.

As it is, there is very little to none of this to be found in the comments on this site. And as pointed out in the other thread, this pool would just encourage more people trying too hard to be funny/witty.

Overall, the highly subjective concept for this kind of pool prevents it from having any real value.

I was thinking that most people would definitely want to try and make pictures a playground for best comment ever, but I was counting on the civility and objectivity of Danbooru to pull sway (as per how stringent its rules and photo approval process is).

Do you think it would be possible to limit comment privileges to users if they were to obstruct comments in due taste for trying to perverse the comment section of a given picture?

I am unsure of the level of control Danbooru's moderators/admin have on the site. Constructivism is welcome.

Danbooru doesn't explicitly store comment count for now, alas. It's possible to implement that metatag, but it'll likely have poor performance.
As for golden comments themselves, technically, those could be found though selecting posts with most comment score, either total or average. The problem is the same, it's bound to have poor performance.

I made a feature request a really long time ago on the bug tracker for a visible counter for comment rating, similar to the thumbs on YouTube (minus the dorkiness; just a red/green number would be more fitting to the site style). Though I still worry it'd have the same effect as a "best comments" pool.

If you mean on per-comment basis, it's easily done with userscripts. That one by kittey, for example, provides such functions; I also wrote some userscript-like abomination for own convenience, that's doing this . I must say it's somewhat distracting from the actual comments, though, at least first few days of using it.

That looks quite nice. Do you have it up somewhere?

Uh, no, not until now :3 I called it abomination for a reason, it's hasty coding at its finest, and I never tested it anywhere but in Opera. Here is the source , but use it at your own risk.

EDIT: updated version to show scores without having to wait for all page elements to load (thanks itsonlyaname for the tip :3), and also to show thumbnail scoring. Save as <name>.js instead of <name>.user.js. This version is even more likely to not work in anything but Opera.

I knew it could be done with userscripts, just figured it might be a nice feature built into the site if it didn't incite weirdness. I haven't bothered with userscripts since Danbooru 2 as it's interesting to follow the base site functionality.

Well, integrating it is actually quite easy, but I feel like it should stay in a userscript. Maybe this should be a user setting, though, just like colored names. I feel like that needs a separate topic/issue to have more opinions, we're going offtopic here for a while :3

I really like the idea of an upvoting system like the one you created, Type-kun! It's a digression, but I think it's also something that should be implemented as well. Would mod/admin be willing to bring it up/try it out, or does anyone know a mod/admin that would be willing to look into the matter?

As for golden comments, I think it could be implemented with the use of favourite categories or "playlists" (although I do not like the term, "playlist") that users can create for themselves that they can add their own "Golden Comment" pictures to. I envision it being similar to favourite categories from DeviantART, or playlists from YouTube, just not on nearly the same level of polish or grandiosity of those respective sites. If they were available publicly, then users would be able to favourite or watch a given user's favourites category, and thus negate the subjectivity and inevitable perversion of the comments section of Danbooru.

I don't see why we would need such large new comment features such as favoriting comments. Danbooru isn't a site for cataloging comments, it's for cataloging illustrations. Comments are just a side effect of that, and not very important.

You can already favorite illustrations, as well as see the votes on them. I think that's enough without needing it for comments as well.

I didn't create anything :3 Scores always were there, they just never show up and are used for thresholding, script just brings them into view. Anyway, made an issue #1702 for now.

If issue #635 gets implemented, this will come true. The ability to allow other users browse your private pools is something to discuss, though.

I agree. My standpoint is that if it simple enough to implement, I think a upvote feature that has a +1/-1 systems similar to YouTube and/or a personal pool feature would be welcomed. If it is too hard to implement, no problem; that's why I'm posing the question in the first place.

I can't wait to see where this goes!
