Cutout tags

Currently there is no real way to search for or tag clothing cutouts in general, and the cutout tag actually refers to a medium/style of border. It's not particularly intuitive and would actually (at least in my opinion) be quite easy to fix with an umbrella tag and some renaming.

Here is a list of clothing cutout tags that have over 100 posts or a wiki:

I suggest creating the tag clothing_cutout - it would serve as an umbrella tag for all of these individual cutout tags, and the more popular ones would imply it. I also suggest renaming the cutout tag to cutout_(style) to reduce confusion and mistagging.

I don't have a problem with clothing_cutout as a less cumbersome alternative to a multi-tag search, considering how many tags there are under the *_cutout banner. But aren't some of these tags redundant to much older, better populated tags?

• breast_cutout is just breastless_clothes.
• nipple_cutout is the same as nippleless_clothes.
• crotch_cutout and pussy_cutout both mean the same thing as crotchless.

I get the impression that these four cutout tags were created by someone who was just unaware of the fact that we already had tags for such garments and was trying to make a standard template out of *_cutout. But the older tags already fit in just fine among all the backless/sleeveless/strapless tags, so I don't see a legitimate reason for replacing them.

If some of the existing x_cutout tags are just duplicates of other already established tags then sure, they ought to be merged into them first. Obviously tags like revealing_cutout and paper_cutout should be exempt from all this, but please feel free to list any other redundant ones you can see.

None of the other cutout tags seem to be completely redundant to a specific existing tag, but I found a few in dire need of cleaning:

• side_cutout gets used in a lot of places that aren't really cutouts. Many of these posts would be better off tagged sideless_clothes or side_slit.
• cross-laced_cutout has the same problem. This tag appears on lots of front or back closures that should be tagged cross-laced_clothes center_opening or cross-laced_clothes backless_outfit, not as any sort of cutout.
• ladder_cutout is used much like cross-laced_cutout, but it isn't as easily replaceable in most cases because there's no equivalent to cross-laced_clothes for ribbons or laces that don't intersect.

And a couple more that look like prime nuking material:

• midriff_cutout could probably be safely divided up among the center_opening, side_cutout, sideless_outfit, and stomach_cutout tags, as it doesn't appear to serve any purpose those tags don't already cover. Apart from post #3460136, which is just an ordinary midriff.
• waist_cutout — I have no idea what this tag is for, but there's an alias to it for some reason. The posts with this tag don't appear to have much in common.

Again, none of this should stand in the way of your clothing_cutout proposal, but it's something to be considered before we start talking about implications.

I agree with you on these points. Perhaps it would be a good idea to make a BUR and leave those out until someone with time on their hands can get around to cleaning them?

Because no matter how you define this tag, it would ultimately end up being used interchangeably with cleavage_cutout.

I have no idea what is the point of splitting these tags up like this. The distinction between lace-up and cross-laced_clothes is trivial at best, and in most cases these two tags are used like synonyms. Also, the only well-populated lace-up* tag is lace-up_boots, and it's essentially a boots cross-laced_footwear search.

What about for male characters? Cleavage_cutout is tagged on some images such as post #3644234 (multiple Jojo characters seem to have outfits that fit the definition,) as well as male characters crossdressing or crossplaying as in post #3650836.

Having a separate tag for boys is not all that necessary of course, but it's perhaps equally unnecessary for the tag name to imply that cleavage or breasts are necessary on the character depicted (even if the wiki clarifies it's not.)

Interestingly, the idea of replacing cleavage_cutout with chest_cutout was suggested and shot down once before, in topic #7091. I don't think it really makes any difference what the tag is called, but having both tags is overkill.

Bumping as I've noticed the revealing_cutout wiki does not match its current usage.

Either it needs to be renamed to something more appropriate, or nuked for something like paper_tear.

I just kind of forgot about this topic, huh? Whoops. In any case, since revealing_cutout is not actually a kind of clothing cutout, I agree it should be renamed to something that doesn't sound like one. layered_cutout sounds nice, but it still has "cutout" in its name so I suggest we rename it to revealing_layer.

Moving on, I'm now going to create three BURs - one for clothing_cutout to be implicated by the larger cutout tags that weren't in need of any cleaning up, another for revealing_cutout's replacement and a third for cutout's replacement. While they're related, they're seperate discussions and should be voted on as such.

rename revealing_cutout -> revealing_layer

"revealing cutout" sounds like a clothing cutout that is revealing, not a style used to give the illusion of a layered image. It is often mistagged because of this, so it should be renamed to something less ambiguous.

rename cutout -> character_cutout

The term "cutout" is used for all kinds of clothing cutout tags, so having a cutout tag that actually has nothing to do with clothing cutouts is a poor idea. The name character_cutout implies that the character is the cutout, and at the very least won't have people wrongly using it for clothing.

This should have been an alias, page tear implies revealing cutout so the implication needs to be moved to the new tag too.

• Navel cutout and stomach cutout are nearly the same thing.
• Thigh cutout and leg cutout are also nearly the same thing. Or they would be, if leg cutout were used correctly. Currently leg cutout is almost entirely side slit dresses on random Aria posts.
