Reworking the rating system

Posted under General

I think that using the system that @thelieutenant mentioned would work best overall, it's the system that the ESRB uses and people overall are more acquainted to it. I don't think keeping Questionable around will help because it's hard to draw a line when it sounds slightly subjective.

Can we get a XXX rating as well? Basically for those posts which are offensive to 99.9% of the people on this planet. E-hentai, of all places, already does something like this.

Isn't that already covered by default blacklists?

God, I'd be so happy w/ the idea, even if it'd be a time-consuming pain to apply in practice. I've been spooked by "safe" pantyshots in public way too many times, lol.

Though, ain't sure how I feel about all swimsuits being inherently lumped into the same category as pantyshots and cameltoes - sure, I'd agree with microbikinis, and hell, even most normal bikinis mostly going to Category2+ (where 1 is mildest), but posts like post #5363936 are so mild that it'd feel kinda jarring.

Unfortunately the judge of what counts as "safe for work" would be a potential payment processor, so an ultra safe rating has to be truly ultra safe. "It's tasteful" is not an argument that's gonna fly for them.

Mature sounds like it would be placed between Q and E rather than G and Q. I think that would cause confusion.

I wasn't thinking about any particular order just that continuining to use S might not be the best of idea, since we've used S as "Safe" for a long time.

Moreover, as stated we already have an issue between Q and E, how much more of an issue will it be if we had...

"Sexual" and "Questionable" as ratings? They sound too similar to me.

TheLieutenant brought up how a different site uses: Everyone, Teen, Mature, and Adult.

hence why I suggested the Mature tag. But we'll have to think about how to properly use it.
One thing we could do is that we've been concentrating on sligtly sexual content.
What about content that features violence and blood such as post #5364149 or post #5343441

Currently those posted are rated safe. While those posted aren't sexual, I would feel a bit more comfortable if I could give them a higher rating then "SAFE"!

EDIT: A second matter came to my mind - would Category2 also be subject to loli/shota tagging? Saw some posts that under current rules are safe, but wouldn't fit the new safest category, like post #4781024 or post #4982125.

Those would definitely not be rating:g, anything that sugggests underage sexualization is a big no. I suppose they would stay under the current rating:s.

Yeah, I said that I don't think they'd be in the lowest category/G, but I wondered if all cat2+ posts that feature children would now be considered lolisho. The examples above are quite extreme in what's right now considered a "safe child" (when it comes to NSFW levels, I mean), and I'm aware of that.

What I meant, is whether or not cat2 (that is, "what currently falls under Safe but has content like swimsuits or pantyshots") posts featuring kids would automatically now become lolisho, or would there be a divide, so posts like post #4959597 or post #4617786 (or more sexualized) would now get the loli tag, while ones like post #4737584 or post #5073977 would get to stay in cat2 while still being widely available (so just "child" tag).

Sorry to seem overly negative but this just comes across as a managerial nightmare with not much gain for a website that is 18+ to begin with. If a person wants to find only the most benignly safe posts amongst the safe category then they can simply use the extant tagging system and the blacklist.

Here are my two cents. I offer no proposal here. This is merely an exhibition.

My classification of metrics

Clothing

  • Revealing clothes
  • Skin-tight attire
  • Accentuating clothes
  • Fetish attire
  • Functional clothes
  • Unclothed dolls, mermaids etc.

Pose

Camera

  • Camera angle
  • Close-up
  • Visible details (e.g. cross_necklace, curse words, hidden baldness)
  • Topics (e.g. on_bed, mouth focus, noose)

Actions

  • Licking, mouth_hold
  • French kiss
  • Kabedon
  • beckoning, reaching_out

Face

  • Agony
  • Disgust
  • Drooling
  • Embarrassed
  • Heavy blush
My samples

I'm in favor of the new rating, since there's times I really just want to seek out cute images more than anything. One question I have though is will safe mode still have the same cutoff? Seems like it would make sense since cutting it to just those ~15% of posts that would get rating:g would be pretty limited.

The current howto:rate already claims that "if an image is loli or shota, it lowers the threshold for what is considered explicit significantly" - so I would suspect images in the former category being "safe" and non-loli are technically mistags, especially if we're thinking about advertisers or payment processors. The new rating:s would make it easier to keep that in line without having to rely on an obscure rules exception.
On the other hand, I think it would be weird for us to say things like post #4737584 or post #5073977 are anything but G-rated.

The fact that rating:safe is actually not safe at all is enough of an indication that the rating system is kind of meaningless as is. I did a rating:safe search a couple minutes ago out of curiosity, and I didn't even have to move away from the first page to see underwear posing, skirt lifting and an ass shot in school clothes. Then the next page had a thick, no-panties nun and some more underwear posing and ass shots. The fact that these are considered "safe" by danbooru metrics means that there's no ACTUAL SFW rating, and that's just baffling really; whether the site is 18+ or not is irrelevant when it comes to properly categorizing the nature of art uploaded to it, especially considering matters of being approved by payment processors, not just users' browsing habits.

Consider that posts can be misrated, and a hypothetical "actual sfw" category does nothing to amend that, nor does it shine a light of objectivity on the inherently subjective nature of "safety", suggestiveness, eroticism, etc. The art uploaded on this site is most meaningfully categorized by the tagging system, not the ratings. The arguments regarding the payment processor also seem nonsensical, since you have to utilize a payment processor to begin with in order to gain access to the hidden tags, which largely contain nothing but "objectionable", "unsafe" content.

Take a look at the upgrade page and read the third line very carefully.

This new rating should have a very clear guideline on howto:rate as well, otherwise if it stands for "Safe For Work", people would have varying opinions of what safe for work is, for some it'd be like how the current rating:s is, for some it'd be like how evazion described it and for some it'd be "If she's showing an ankle it's rating:s".
