Skin tag qualifiers for gacha non-gacha skin tags

Posted under General

This is something I've noticed, but I wanted to ask - what qualifier should be given to non-gacha characters who receive skins in gacha game crossovers?

I'm personally familiar with the fact that Elphelt Valentine and Kizuna Ai have gacha skin tags which use the qualifier of the game from which the skin came from - Elphelt Valentine (Doll Annihilator) (Girls' Frontline), Elphelt Valentine (Magnum Wedding) (Girls' Frontline), Kizuna Ai (Festive) (Azur Lane), and Kizuna Ai (Future Notes) (SMC). However, the DoA characters that crossed over with Azur Lane have the qualifiers from the series that the characters came from - Honoka (Summer Angel on the Shore) (DoA), Kasumi (Springside Mist) (DoA), Tamaki (Venus Shower Time) (DoA), and Luna (Venus of the Beach) (DoA). There's probably more example of either/or, but regardless, my point is that this doesn't appear to be standardized (and this isn't accounting for collab skins where neither option is mentioned, ex. Reisalin Stout (Late Night Alchemist) or Shirakami Fubuki (Beachside Fox)).

Of course, the DoA characters all originally had qualifiers on their base tags too, so by standard procedure they should inherit those for these tags, but should that approach of "use qualifier from character's copytag" be used in general instead of "use qualifier from skin's copytag"? Should characters without qualifiers be given qualifiers to begin with? Or should we just nuke these in general, and stick with the traditional "search chartag collab_copytag instead" approach?

There's been discussion on the Discord about this but I'll make my reply here for formality (and maybe to get an admin's opinion).

The primary issue that was raised with the skin tags/costume tags is that besides the inconsistency of what to name the chartag, it would trigger potential debates on what to name them if there's no official name available for the skins. Especially if these official alternate costumes do get some form of recognition in the franchise they originally come from. The compromise agreement for the time being was that if a non-gacha character receives both a skin and a definite name for the said skin, then they get a chartag for the skin/OAC. But only if they have a clear name.

This presented a problem with the Valkyrie Connect collab skins of four Nijisanji vtubers when they didn't receive an official name for their in-game outfits and yet they ended up with fully-rigged L2D rigs for regular streaming use. For now, we've excluded them from the costume chartagging that we're adopting for vtubers with the intention of adopting a definite solution for them once we're in the process of renaming/aliasing the costume tags. I mean, when we say they don't have a proper name, we mean that since the JP Niji wiki only lists their OACs as "new outfit: Valkyrie Connect".

If you ask me, Kizuna AI (Festive) (Azur Lane) should be renamed to eliminate the qualifier to make it consistent to the other KizAI chartags that don't have a game qualifier. Also, I'm in favor of renaming the collab chartags to remove the game qualifiers.

We can apply any solution we decide on in their appropriate forum topics: topic #23520 for vtubers, for example. Maybe this can be a precedent for future instances.
