Confused about the alternate_costume tag

Posted under Tags

The wiki describes this tag as "A character wearing a costume other than the one they are typically depicted in"...but doesn't that happen like...a lot? Like someone draws a character in a bikini, or lingerie, or a random dress and then BOOM that's an alternate costume? Am I understanding that correctly?

Also...the terminology just sounds bad. The word "alternate" sounds like something the character canonically has, which is the opposite of the meaning of the tag. Like "I'll use my alternate costume" as if it's just hanging up in the closet. Wouldn't something like "unofficial_costume" be better?

That is pretty literally what the tag is for yes, a character being depicted wearing something other than their standard costume.

I don't think the word alternate makes it sound particularly official; alternate/alternative means "different from the usual or conventional".
With that said, the existence of official_alternate_costume should make it clear what the distinction is but alternate_costume does just sound like an umbrella that includes official costumes, rather than a separate tag for unofficial costumes only, in fact only the official_alternate_costume wiki states they are mutually exclusive, the wording of alternate_costume wiki doesn't particularly sound like it should exclude official ones.
