Regarding Birthdays

Posted under Tags

Bringing this up since today's the birthday of Sonoda_Umi and there's more art of her than usual. This of course isn't limited to her, just the one that got me thinking.

After consulting in the #tagging channel on the server, it seems we don't really have a way to specifically search for art produced for a character's birthday.

We currently have birthday, which is a gentag that should only be used when the picture is depicting a birthday or some activity pertaining to it, so most of these new images (see for example post #7331277 or post #7331264) don't apply.
Separately, we have happy birthday, which can presumably apply to any picture (regardless of whether it depicts an actual birthday or not) as long as the exact phrase is written somewhere in the picture.

For the pictures linked above, neither of these work, and yet both are themed around something specific - a character's birthday and its celebration (IRL at least).
Should we consider a way to find these kinds of pictures?
On the server a proposal came up for making pools, but that in turn brings up the question of whether to have per-character or per-copyright pools, or maybe even just a single gigantic pool to toss every picture regardless of origin/classification... but at that point it feels like a tag (probably a metatag?) would work better.

If anybody would like to chime in, please go ahead. I'd personally be in favor of doing it with a tag rather than pools.

Yeah like someone will post a picture of Umi that the artist drew at another date (not at March 15, hence not for celebrating her birthday), just by chance it was posted today because that user discovered it today. I personally don't really mind our existing birthday tag, but maybe we need to change the wiki description of that tag.

I don't see the utility in it. Another example is today is 3/14 and Hayase Yuuka's birthday. Absent specific references to it being her birthday within the image, I don't see particular utility in searching for images produced in celebration of her birthday, as without certain birthday celebration rituals depicted within the image (e.g. birthday cake, birthday party, gift giving), they are simply an image like any other which depicts the character. Perfect example is the contrast between post #7331994 and post #7331993, the first one is just Yuuka sitting with Noa. The second specifically calls out her birthday, but is otherwise the same image. Absent that specific reference to her birthday, it's just an ordinary picture of Yuuka and Noa.

Another issue I could see is if the artist makes a picture in recognition of a birthday but the uploader fails to notice this due to no fault of their own if the image doesn't explicitly contain a reference to it.

None of the pool options are good.
Per-character/copyright just means a plethora of niche pools that have a 99% chance to be neglected mostly due to the average user not even being aware of said pools + a multitude of other user-based factors.

And like you said, if it is to be one centralized place for all characters, then it might as well be a metatag.

I'm not really that hooked on the need for such a thing, but since i don't find a reason to be against it, if there has to be a search option for art produced for character birthdays, it's a meta tag, or nothing

We already do this to an extent, with tags like Miku Day getting added even if no mention of it is made in the image, but maybe in the commentary. While I am fond of the idea because it would be difficult to find commemorative posts other than searching in the commentary for phrases (can you even do that?) I think that even as a metatag it would pad 90% of posts, and perhaps 10% might have some valuable reference/homage to a birthday too subtle to be tagged birthday.

And for the record, I don’t think we should be using day tags or birthday unless the date/other details are explicitly present in the image, but it seems like many people have been doing that for a long time.
