We don't have a real policy when it comes to most of these where the word could be interpreted either as a noun or a verb. For things like kiss, smile, grin, blush, etc, I think keeping it as a noun looks better. The primary reason to use the gerund form is to make verbs into nouns. Why should we do that when the word is a noun to begin with?

Almost anything can be used as a noun and most nouns can be turned into a verb though. Is it really that clear which one it "began" as?
Regardless, I'd say the primary reason to use the gerund form isn't simply "to make it a noun" but more specifically "to make it an action".
