The Contradictory Existence of Incest Tags, and the Need For A New Tag Group

Posted under Tags

incest is very often not something which is clarfied within an image. Tagging it requires knowledge of the source material, of the canon relationships between the characters. Danbooru’s rule is to visually tag, which incest is not, unless it’s noted in the image. Incest a tag which logically should not exist by those rules, but it’s allowed. There are five categories of tags on this site:

  • Artist
  • Copyright
  • Character
  • General
  • Meta

On some imageboard sites, there exists a category of tags called Lore tags. These typically contain two general groups of tags

Familial relationship tags should be differentiated from the general tag group due to requiring in universe knowledge, and gender identity tags should be created in a new tag group for details requiring in universe knowledge. That’s it, goodbye.

"Tag what you see" does not literally mean "only tag what you can visually discern with your eyes." You're allowed to use outside context to tag images, within reason. Tags like otoko no ko and incest often cannot be applied solely through information found within the image itself, but they're both popular, well-established fetishes, so it would be ridiculous for us to say they can't exist.

The admins have expressed disinterest in new tag categories because they think it would just make the process more convoluted and more visually messy.
