Should something be done about self advertising?

Posted under General

Self advertising and dumping AI stuff by the bucket load are two completely separate things that shouldn't be thrown together.
Danbooru's stance on AI is clear enough, so I'm not going to delve further into that, but the stance on self advertising is something that needs more awareness.

Even though the Uploading One's Own Art is Discouraged guideline was removed in August 2022, to this day, there still is this persistent view among a small part of the Danbooru userbase that self uploaded posts are "frowned upon", "discouraged", or even "banned", to the point where the term "self-upload" is even used as an insult.
Even if an artist self-uploads dozens of images in bulk with visible links to their Patreon page, as long they pass the quality guidelines and are sufficiently tagged, everything is perfectly fine.

While henkawa is currently heavily in the spotlights, on the other end of the spectrum are artists like nepopan who self-uploaded their first two posts under their tag. Two absolutely gorgeous uncensored animations.
Was this to advertise their Twitter and Patreon? Absolutely. They even added their Patreon link in the commentary field.

We need more artists like that. We get great art and they get some awareness. It's a win-win.

Yeah i guess thats fair enough, it just seems to be abused a lot by people who use AI stuff in some way, which sucks

Self uploading doesn't really mean advertising to begin with, lots of people self upload cause they wanted to see how others would react.

Advertising itself isn't a problem either, this is an archival site for quality illustrations, as long as it's good its fine.

AI is a no go unless assisted at most, separate issue.

I personally believe this site isn't cracking down on AI as hard as it needs to be.

Obviously, most AI "artists" aren't just going to outright admit they're using AI. And even if they get found out, they'll just say it was "assisted".

This site is the only large art site besides Cara not entirely overrun with slop, I think we're doing adequately.

I think that we are doing a good enough job? We have an entire AI check thread, people will occasionally ask if something that's definitely human-made might be AI just out of an overabundance of caution, and the mandatory process of sourcing and creating artist entries has the side-effect of making flushing out AI uploaders something that happens just in the course of doing business- because if you're checking the artist's pixiv and twitter, then 9/10 times you'll be able to see the sketches, WIPs, and various other forms of proof of human creation. That's how I prevented myself from accidentally uploading an AI image one time, I checked the artist's socials, ended up spotting the words "Stable Diffusion", L averted. And if something is actually, genuinely impossible to tell as being AI... well, good job, I guess? But I highly doubt any AI slopper is gonna be willing to put in THAT much effort to generate a convincing image- the only cases close to that I'm aware of are ones where the image in question is truly AI assisted, as in, the entire original generated image has been traced, painted, and rendered over fully by human hands, which in turn makes it within our rules.

Yeah no you guys are doing a good job, some things do slip through the cracks but that's fair enough, human error does exist
I guess the whole self uploading thing was pretty harsh from me considering legit artists do the same thing.. my bad

Kind of wish it was easier to report other users but it sounds abusable as hell

The only time I've really wanted to actually report users were the times users kept spamming artist entries with nonsense. Best I could do was leave negative feedbacks user #1310204 just wouldn't fucking stop and it happened to be while admins were asleep which is probably the best option for most of us.
