The Argyle pattern refers to the design of a diamond grid overlaid on top of a solid color diamond checkerboard pattern.
On Danbooru, though, this term seems to just refer to any diamond pattern. For example argyle_shirt, argyle_thighhighs, and argyle_background.
I think there might be a need to tag and search for the actual Argyle pattern. Should we consider using "diamond pattern" instead for the more general case?
We do have the very small diamond_print but yes currently argyle is being used for any repeating diamond pattern.
I personally don't think there is a meaningful difference between this sock on wikipedia and Homura's non-grid diamond thighhighs post #8445815.
It's being overused. It's like using plaid or gingham for regular checkered clothes because they both involve squares.
In real life it's not just any vaguely diamond-shaped pattern, it's a particular diamond pattern with thin lines running through the middle:
