Would you consider those scarves or neckties? Technically I think those are tied scarves but would people searching for scarf expect to see those? Would someone searching for necktie expect to see those?
Scarves are supposed to be worn around the neck or head, not around the collar, so they're definitely not scarves.
And although they don't quite look like your traditional necktie, they still serve the same function as one (being tied around a shirt's collar to keep it well-formed and/or for decoration). So, I'd say they're neckties.
But hmmm... it looks like we might need a new tag to describe these.
I don't think they're either. Cravats are generally tucked into the collar of a shirt, and are usually layered and/or pleated. And they're definitely not neck ribbons, since they actually have to be ribbons - just tied around the neck.
Though technically an ascot is just the type of knot. It can be a scarf or a cravat. So I wonder if it would be correct to call it an ascot, or maybe an ascot scarf/ascot knotted scarf?
This also raises the question does the wiki page need updating to more correctly reflect what an ascot is (again just a style of knot vs and ascot tied scarf or ascot tied cravat)

It's the one under the collar. That is one of the reasons I was thinking about the distinction between scarf, "ascot knot scarf" and necktie.
When you think about it, Reimu, Alice and Koakuma all wear them and I am sure others do as well. I was thinking it might be a justifiable reason to add a specific tag for them (once we figured out what they were).

Oh, hah, that. Had scarves on the brain so I didn't even see it. That's definitely not a scarf, no. I guess neckerchief sounds as good as anything, but anything accurate is fine.

Some of those images are definitely scarves (first one for sure) and others can't be neckerchief due to having square ends (as it would have to be pointed in a triangle).
Anyway I think I might be over thinking this way too much. While not being 100% technically correct I am liking ascot (being a knot as opposed to the item itself).
The question is, doe it matter? I am guessing not so much... well unless the fashion police invade us anyway.

Not strictly true. The Ascot is the formalwear version (typically worn with morning dress) of what is also referred to as a day cravat. The former is usually made of thicker/more luxorious cloth and tend to be more subdued in nature, where as the later tend to come in a variety of materials and patterns, and sometimes shapes too.

Fair enough, ascot it is since we all like scooby-doo. :)
