Post Scores

Posted under General

I've noticed that you can give points or subtract points from users, and give an explanation as to why, could a similar system be implemented for scores given to specific posts?

It would help if I could see the general trend of why people are downvoting or upvoting.

I think adding a comment would make the UI more cumbersome.

Not to mention most people would probably be too arsed to even bother voting if they had to write a comment every time (I know I certainly would).

It's probably best to leave it as a vote-and-forget type of thing.

Perhaps as an optional reason, so it can help, especially newer, users figure out what elements are wrong in their post and how to improve the quality.

Even if leaving a comment with your vote is optional, its purpose would largely overlap with Danbooru's already-existing comment system. What'd be the point of having two separate comment systems that'd essentially accomplish the same thing?

If someone wants to give their input, they can just leave a comment. And if an uploader has a question, they can do the same.

People may vote down an image for the pairing, character, or even the uploader. So it's best if you ditch the idea that score equals quality.

Yukkuris tend to get a bad vibe.

I know what Anelaid is getting here. You get a score of -5 but no comments (generally people don't make score related comments) you are left wondering, is it ugly, is it offensive or are people just in a bad mood?

That's one of the things that is an issue for new uploaders. When something is down rated and dies in the queue, one can be left wondering what was wrong with it exactly.

Most people won't have the eye to tell what might be wrong with an image and honestly lurking is only so-so in that respect.

More feedback would be nice but not really realistic considering the volume of images.

I hesitate to suggest this but what about an image feedback topic when new posters can ask what people felt about their image uploads. This goes back to the "tutorial" concept.

I like them myself. Something so cute and creepy about them.

I like them but I can understand the delay if there is a niche audience for a type of audience and most, if not all, of the mods don't share that niche considering how it works. Thats why it would be useful to know if the score is "I don't like this" or "this is a poor image" even though the two are closely related.

But I also understand that if people wanted to give feedback, they would use the comments and there is no way to force it without making it more trouble than its worth, since there are tutorials, lurking, trial and error, etc.,

part of it too is the inconsistency of it, I've seen similar posts take different times to be accepted and other times, one is approved and the other isn't, so anything that will help the process of figuring out what works, or what is poor quality, will help.

Yeah, I see what his point is too. But the truth is that you can't concretely describe which type of content is more likely to be approved, because the moderation system is entirely subjective, and is based on what any given approver personally likes.

The best route, as Scarlet200% also mentioned, is to lurk and get a feel for what's generally-accepted content.

Would be nice but 99/100 people would not use it.

T&E is by far you best option. It really helps get you to a point where you can see what quality will generally pass if the image is interesting to the mods.

Getting an understanding of the mods tastes is far more interesting. Not only does the image content matter but what that image related to. That is, is it Touhou, K-On, or one of the other 15 zillion subjects. Chibi K-on might get high approvals, but chibi Touhou might not. Hell it can even get as specific as the characters themselves.

part of it too is the inconsistency of it, I've seen similar posts take different times to be accepted and other times, one is approved and the other isn't, so anything that will help the process of figuring out what works, or what is poor quality, will help.

That's the human factor though, not much can be done about that. Really you can only tutorial "quality" as a guideline and even that is highly subjective.

Basically you post an image with the characters eyes near it's mouth you are less likely to be approved.

On the other hand the most beautiful image in the world could go through the queue if no mods were interested. It's a lot less likely then the above example but still possible. Nothing in the end can truly solve that problem.

I like Scarlet's idea of an image feedback topic, it's not like people will be forced to post there, just if you want. And we could make it so that people can only ask about the scores of one or maybe two images per post.

I have a better idea, I think.

I agree that forcing votes to be commented, or even having optional commented votes, overlaps with the existing comment system too much to be viable. But that’s not what Analaid really wants; he wants a reason, not a comment. So let’s reduce it just to that. Replace the “up/down” link with a small set of reasons:

Vote Up:

  • Beautiful
  • Creative
  • Sexy
  • Funny
  • Adorable
  • Emotive

Vote Down:

  • Poorly Drawn
  • Off Topic
  • Disgusting
  • Lame
  • Creepy
  • Boring

In addition to these, we could just throw in generic “Good” and “Bad” options for people too lazy to choose, or to cover reasons not listed. If this system were implemented, existing scores would be mapped to those. Then we can display the count next to each reason, and list the total score as the sum of the Ups minus the sum of the Downs.

This would actually solve quite a number of problems. First of all, it provides the feedback that Anelaid is looking for, without forcing voters to type something up. Secondly, it provides a way for people to express specific feelings for posts in a way that doesn’t speak for everyone. People are always complaining that certain pools (Clever, Disgustingly Adorable, etc) are being “abused” by people adding posts that are creative/adorable, but not to the point where they merit being in the pool. Having a lesser (and easier, being that it’d be one click) option would surely cut down on this. And finally, this system also has the advantage that it would show the total amount of votes. If a picture is very controversial, garnering many up-votes and down-votes, this controversy would be hidden under the current system, but perfectly visible in this one.

And of course, it'd be statistician porn. Imagine being able to search or order by creativity score...

Add "Beaten to post" and "Dislike user" to the Vote Down list and we're good.

Really, though, your ideas interest me. Such a system would probably over complicate things, though. An original score:cute score:creative score:funny -score:poorlydrawn -score:disgusting plus_whatever_other_tags_like_animal_ears_or_clothing_stuff search doesn't sound too fun.

(I doubt the metatags would be exactly like that but you see the point I'm trying to make, right?)

Scarlet's suggestion is something that should definitely be remembered the next time people get tired of newbies starting their personal "What Have I Done Wrong?" topics.

(I am just trying to get a grip of what is going on here after my hiatus.)
