Tag usage: yaranaika

Posted under General

The yaranaika has to be one of the least understood tags on Danbooru. yaranaika is a meme tag, and from my understanding I think it should refer only to the phrase or that very scene where Abe_Takakazu unzips his now famous blue suit.

However, the actual use of yaranaika ends up much broader than probably all the other tags. Yaranaika in practice has been used as a substitute to the Abe_Takakazu, Michishita_Masaki and Kuso_Miso_Technique tags.

It appears that most people familiar to the meme or the parodies aren't too familiar with the comic and the characters. I think many would even simply refer to the two and the comic simply as 'yaranaika'.

While such use of the tag may seem to work well or at least good enough, I think it represents a poor precedence of tag usage. Tags are supposed to "break down" an image into words, not group them together.

Meanwhile, I am about to get started on retagging the yaranaika posts. Please do let me know any issues I may have overlooked.

What? That's just going to confuse the hell out of people. Sure, the phrase "yaranaika" is only spoken when Abe unzips his jumpsuit, but the meme itself has evolved to include the faces as well. And no, "use the abe_takakazu tag or the michishita_masaki tags for the faces" isn't a fix because that's a load of noise you have to sift through on the off-chance you want to find the actual Abe or Michishita.

It is confusing. Even more so because the original blanket term for all the memes from kuso_miso_technique was "yamajun".

"Yamajun" included:

  • "yaranaika"
  • "uho ii otoko"
  • the faces
  • parodies of the cover page
  • and other not-so-famous phrases.

In other words, "yaranaika" has been used in place of "yamajun". That presents a problem, because:

This retagging is for historical accuracy. The usage of the tag on pixiv (やらないか) is not exactly historically accurate.

Besides, tagging on pixiv was never about accuracy, with different artists using their own rendering (katakana/hiragana/kanji/romaji) of the same tag. And then I've seen many pixiv tags used as comments.
