Cleaning up Pot tag - ambiguous

Posted under General

I'm not sure we should be mixing cookware pots with ceramic pots. It would probably be better to limit the pot tag to the ceramic type and place the cooking type under cooking pot.

Pottery would be more generic than pot, as it would be any time of ceramic ware made by a potter (which are not all pots). It appears right now used for one image of a person making pottery, perhaps for depictions of people making it they should be tagged potter.

I think flower pot should probably be renamed plant pot, which should be used for tagging the object. Potted plant should then be limited to depictions of actual plants in a pot, so depictions like post #561907 would fall under plant pot instead. Users looking for potted flowers could simply perform a potted_plant flower search (might not be 100% accurate, but would be reliable enough in my opinion).

If we limit pots to the ceramic (and possibly plastic) type(s), then we could probably then do something like have potted plant implicate plant pot, and have plant pot implicate pot.

Mostly due to the association that a flower pot has to have a flowering plant in it, as an implication of potted plant to flower pot seems a little off (though if that is what would be preferred I wouldn't argue against it). Additionally I think there is somewhat of a stereotype that a flower pot is usually a small ceramic pot, wheres a plant pot might not have such a preconception in size.

As you say though, flower pot is much more common and that was what I'd personnally think up first. Only reason I went with plant pot was seeing it on wikipedia and thought it sounded like a much more generic term. A google image search also shows that it is used, though much less than flower pot (though most of them have specifically flowers or flowering plants in them, and are small in size).

I think Plant Pot is more generic and gathers up green plants and flowering plants as a whole, so I like that suggestion.

When it comes to the brown colored pots, which are clearly earth material. I am not sure what to call it besides pot.

Although I have not looked at every image under Pot.
