That's exactly my point: either we go with official romanization - then it's this puella thing, or we stay at pure japanese one (without guessing how katakana words should be really written this time). There is no single reason to mix it.

There's no guessing involved because it's a non-Japanese word written in katakana and they've already indicated the spelling for us. Magica is Magica regardless of whether we go Mahou Shoujo or Puella Magi. The latter choice doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the former.
If this is reversed then the same could be said to apply to Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha -> Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha, since that is also the romaji used in the official logo.

Huh? Haduki wants to alias it to Puella Magi, while wanchan points out that you could make the same argument for changing almost any "Mahou Shoujo" into "Magical Girl"

As I said, the reason I want it reverted is precisely to make it different than what we have for Nanoha. Since the room for crossovers and parodies is so big, it makes it very hard to scan tags if both franchises are called "Mahou Shoujo tl;dr". Especially if you take into account that Madoka already has two spinoffs announced.
If the original Japanese title also includes a separate English/romanized title, don't we normally go with the romanized one? That would explain why we use the English titles for the Touhou games and not touhou_koumakyou, etc. . Although I guess those are also actually subtitles.
Also, I've noticed users translate 魔法少女 as "puella magi". No matter which way the alias goes, I'd always translate it as "magical girl" even if the text parodies the show's title. Example: post #855647, post #856528

I can live with either Puella Magi or Mahou Shoujo (I use the latter myself), but I'm not sure "It looks a lot like other tags" is something I'd use as a basis for tagging policy.

Not necessarily. See hayate_no_gotoku!. It would be difficult to find them all and tally them up but I'd guess more often than not we don't use it.

It's not only "looks like the other", but the fact that both it and Nanoha have long-winded titles, there's a shitload of Nanoha subtags, and they're a painfully obvious target for crossovers and parodies. So it's not that I just decided it'd be good to avoid potential problems, I brought it up because I've been annoyed by it happening in practice.
