Just for the record, the policy is less intended to immortalize anyone's mistakes than to enhance the forum as a repository of prior discussions and decisions.

If you keep the thread title/content intact and someone else with the same idea comes along and is prescient enough to do a search and find this thread, they won't create their own request. They'll know it was already addressed and decided against. If the thread is deleted, people can't know it's already come up.
