Aliasing hud -> heads-up_display.
Reason: The latter is the written out version of the former.
also alias
heads_up_display -> heads-up_display
heads-up-display -> heads-up_display
These are common possible errors.

That acronym definition is actually incorrect.
head-up display is correct
I've never heard anyone refer to it as a head-up display and even the article itself lists both in the first sentence.
Is the tag supposed to apply to game interfaces like post #478719, post #564101, post #823745?
I have a feeling it shouldn't, but I'm not quite sure what the criteria should be.

Just because everyone commonly mis-speaks, does not make it correct. Consider this, with only one head on the human body how can it be a heads-up display?
The display is giving you a "heads-up".

No

Incorrect, the display is allowing you to see the relevant information without going head-down or looking at instruments while operating an aircraft or other machinery.
Audio alerts give "heads-up"
Looking up "heads-up" on Google gives me this.
Information or notification, especially in advance
How does it being a display make this wrong?

Simply because the head-up display provides information and visual cues in real-time, not in the future, or past.

Given that I've never seen it referred to as a head-up display, the heads-up refers to being given the "heads-up" in terms of information. Its listed as either or, and HUD, which is common in gaming, always refers to heads-up_display.

I've seen characters wearing a literal heads-up display and that seems to make up the majority of the tags.
The definition I posted only states "especially in advance". As in, it's mostly used for "in advance information" but it can be real-time information as well.
If someone gets shot down somewhere you can't see, and your HUD shows this, are you not given a "heads up" that someone has been shot down?
I've also never heard it called "head-up". It does makes sense because it allows you to keep your head up while receiving information. "Heads-up" also makes sense, because it always displays information such as ammo/grenade count, giving you a constant heads-up when you use ammo or take damage. Being the CoD beast that I am, I prefer heads-up.

I have. Old issues of Jane's and manuals. There was no hyphen then (Head Up Display)--that version definitely came first.
may i propose a related tag alias:
head_mounted_display -> heads-up_display
reason: the latter, according to definition, already encompasses even characters wearing one on their head. it seems redundant, unless we are giving a separate definition for the former.
I would argue against this, as "heads-up_display" should be visible from the PoV of the viewer, a set of fancy goggles in 3rd person doesn't give you that.
i've checked the heads-up_display and the entry was only recently changed/added? maybe the user assumed that hud refers to the equipment also, not only to the information given. however, if we are going to add the pov qualifier, then it must be indicated too, to avoid confusion/redundancy.
