-1. "Athletic" can just as easily be construed as an athletic event or a feat of athleticism. With "toned," there's little else to mind than "toned body," unless there's another use of the word I'm not aware of.
From what I've seen, toned is lower-key with an emphasis on fitness than bulk, while muscle is used for pretty much bodybuilder body types, with obviously sculpted abs, biceps, calves, etc.
