Danbooru

Tag discussion: horo vs. holo

If I recall correctly there was a similar issue years ago pre-Danbooru with Berserk regarding Guts's name. Fansubbers used "Gatts" (Gattsu) because "Guts" sounds a little odd for a name, but it was later confirmed by the author that it was in fact supposed to be Guts.

... But then again, I've seen Griffith's name spelled (officially) as Griffiths in the menu of the R2 DVD release. The US version used Griffith IIRC. A little bit of an odd case as both are actual name spellings, and there is no hard ending "th" sound in Japanese. As far as I know the "Griffith" spelling is now considered the correct one. Danbooru uses it, at least.

So, I'm not sure what the issue is.

The issue is that the person who makes the decision is on record preferring "Horo", and I can guarandamntee that he's not changing his mind on this point.

Boy this thread sure is tl;dr

Isn't this a case of policy not preference? That is, the "decision" is an objective one not a subjective one.

Policy isn't everything. Sometimes it's better to use common sense and go on a case-by-case basis rather than blindly stick to whatever botched-up romanization some dude in Japan came up with.

Its a matter of "jxh gets to decide what tag alias's go through, and he's not going to do this one"

There is nothing conclusive either way to say it is right or wrong as far as romanization goes it seems.

Going with policy in this case seems to provide the "concrete" answer.

Which would be a shame since it seems to be the correct spelling according to the rules.

I'm surprised by this resolution.

Author of original light novels did not confirm any romanization, all sources of "Holo" are from related parties like license holders, anime production staff or foreign localizations.
Logically, there are just as many indications in the support of Horo as there are for Holo.
Majority of the site staff (janitors/mods, admin) prefer Horo, same for the userbase.

It does seem to me that jxh2154 is asking to shut up the wrong side, especially seeing that there were only two users hellbent on changing it to Holo.

P.S. You can count this post as a request to reverse the alias direction.

Yes, it is probably wisest to let the molemen rebuild their forces before trying to take over the over world again and wait for the over worlders let down their guard.

It normally takes like 100 years before the evil comes to jeopardize the land again, so in danbooru's timescale... probably see this thing return again in like a year?

howto:romanize

Under examples.

Basically the name is not Japanese so we use official sources. The license holder is an official source and since the author made no distinction we should go with that.

Jhx made his own decision for his own reasons what I posted above is to try and stop the argument about which spelling to use.
