I’m voting for a reverse aliasing because apparently layered_kimono is what it’s called almost everywhere outside the ’boorus.
Googling for "multilayer kimono" brings up Danbooru, Gelbooru and Sankaku Channel on the first page, with other ’boorus following on further pages, while "layered kimono" yields 20k+ non-booru results.
A search for "multilayer kimono" -danbooru -gelbooru -sankaku -safebooru -rule34 -xbooru -tbib only brings up a few dodgy anime-related sites, so I don’t think this is the correct term.
(Other possible things to exclude from that search: -hentai -deviantart -fanfic -cosplay -tumblr -mjv-art -anime-pictures -imvu ...and almost nothing is left.)
We chose multilayer in forum #25723 but I'm up for reversing it if it has more support.
I like multilayer_kimono more because it is less ambiguous. As per forum #25723 this tag should be used for kimono that has more than 2 layers and I think that multilayer_kimono conveys this idea better.

Oops, my forum-fu is weak. Sorry about that.
I still think we should use fitting “official” translations that are widely used elsewhere instead of making up our own names, but go with multilayer_kimono if that’s what everyone else wants instead.

Layered_kimono is more widely used, true, but it's not an "official" name/term, just a general description. Various types of multilayered kimono have their own official names, for example Juunihitoe.
