EDIT: Reading the translations, when it says "a mage who can fight evenly with a Servant" I wonder if that means this Shirou and Saber are from the UBW Good End instead of the Fate route?

When you think about it, it's kind of creepy. I wonder if Shirou would look at that younger self who never went through the fire, and wonder if in a way he ironically maybe made his life worse because that younger Shirou who never went through the fire will just be ordinary. Powerless against the supernatural. Whereas Emiya Shirou does have the ability to fight against the supernatural and not be another victim to it.

The Shirou who never went through the fire wouldn't even _be_ Shirou. To survive the flames Shirou pretty much sacrificed who ever he might have been and emerged as a blank slate. That child would just be another innocent to be saved and nothing more.

An AU story with Archer addresses that as its variation of the F/Z events resulted in among things, Archer being summoned instead of Saber and the fire being prevented. He notes that even with his regrets, he'd still choose his life over the ordinary.
