Wasn't the mis-reputation due to soldiers firing the M2 variant on full-auto at targets way outside of effective range, causing most, if not all their shots, to just outright miss?

I think the main problem for the carbine in Korea is that in the hellish winter the .30 carbine rounds didn't have enough power to penetrate the thick winter clothing of chinese soldiers. Part of that can be traced to the lack of a pointed spitzer bullet '.30 carbine is round nosed like handgun ammunition' and the other part is they weren't as hotly loaded as 30-06 or the .45 acp.

Er. No. Frozen clothing doesn't provide anywhere near enough protection against 30 carbine. 30 carbine hits like a 357 magnum at the muzzle at a range of 200 yards.

The M1A1's ammo had problems in the cold, misfiring and poorly firing in bad climatic conditions. Eventually an entire new production run of ammo (and upgrades for existing M1A1s to prevent them from jamming in the extreme cold) was done and much of the gun's problems were addressed, but the bad reputation lived on.
M8 rifle grenade has great destruction power.Eh? Really!?Climate Affected MoodPacific War*ta-ta-ta-ta*Outstanding rapid fire for suppressionIwo Jima*pew**BOOOM!*Korean WarM1 Carbine didn't help her soldiers much in Korean War, as the extremely cold environmental condition of Korea effectively lowered its reliability.A legend was thus created: M1 Carbine can't even penetrate the cotton coats of Chinese soldiers. I'm very sorry about that...*slup*Compared to M1 Garand, M1 Carbine has clips that are easier to reload and a bigger capacity, has a faster rate of fire and lower kick back. Its power and aim are also superior than submachine guns that use pistol bullets. Thus, M1 Carbine and all its variants are an effective close range infantry weapon. Douglas MacArthur called these rapid firing Carbines "our biggest reason of winning the Pacific War."
