You come to a world where all the creatures are intelligent to a certain degree but you still need to eat so the idea of the food-chain is explored, with many of these same intelligent creatures admitting that they know they'll probably end up as food at some point so they simply try to live the best life they can before that inevitability.
Whether or not it's played for laughs or is a deep introspection could also be looked into.
I think it can do both. There have been number of mangas that have decent comedy but still take the core concept seriously enough to be introspective and no small amount of dark.

There are older speculative works which depict how an intrinsically noble utopian race would behave with every member making an educated freewill decision to sacrifice everything up to and including their own lives for the purpose of uplifting the individuals around them. Usually through the eyes of a 'civilized' outsider who starts out bewildered that they have not died out already and often times eventually learns to exploit the natives' unshakeable trust and goodwill.
