Personally, I interpret it as both of them being in love but having different methods of coping with it. While Maribel is wracked with indecision and inaction, Renko endevours to spend as much time as possible together. In that instance it would be Maribel that is the dense one, considering Renko is a lot less subtle (though that isn't a difficult task, what with Maribel attempting to win the shrinking violet championship).
