saratoga (azur lane)
サラトガ(アズールレーン) サラトガ改(アズールレーン) 萨拉托加
Azur Lane's personification of the US Navy aircraft carrier USS Saratoga (CV-3).
Character design by Saru, voiced by Uesaka Sumire.
Appearance
A jarringly young-looking girl with an equally childish and girly personality. She has long, pink hair in twintails with an ahoge while wearing a hairband with a smokestack-like accessory. She wears a backless-like, sleeveless dress with a black ribbon on it, and an attached cannon. Underneath it was a military uniform with an armband. She also wears black pantyhose and elbow gloves as well as carrying a staff with a flight deck-like banner. She has small breasts that she's conscious of compared to the much more endowed Illustrious and Ranger. The fact that she has them at all tends to be forgotten by others, including her own artist, Saru as seen in a number of her skins.
Gameplay
In game, she can be constructed or obtained as a free bonus when the player makes their first purchase; the lowest that can be spent being 120 yen (about $1 in US dollars). Gameplay-wise, Saratoga is merely decent (though her and her sister's kits lend themselves to mob clearing fleets) and there are a good amount of shipgirls that outclass her. However, later on she gains a retrofit that can go toe-to-toe against Enterprise in terms of utility and skill usage.
History
Historically, the USS Saratoga was one of only three pre-war US carriers to survive spending the whole war in the Pacific, alongside Enterprise and Ranger. Saratoga was involved in numerous campaigns, including:
- Battle of Wake Island
- Guadalcanal Campaign, in which she sank light aircraft carrier Ryuujou
- New Georgia Campaign
- Bougainville Campaign, which includes the raid on Rabaul where she joined Essex, Bunker Hill, Independence, and Princeton
- Gilbert and Marshall Islands Campaign
- Battle of Iwo Jima
During this time, Saratoga received damage numerous times from IJN submarines and kamikaze attacks, forcing long stretches of repair or refit time that led her to miss important battles. This includes one torpedo from I-26 (which led her to miss the decisive Naval Battle of Guadalcanal). By the end of the war, she had been refit to be a dedicated night carrier, but after another round of damage from kamikaze attacks at Iwo Jima, was relegated to permanent training carrier duty. Ultimately, she was considered too obsolete, and was expended as a nuclear test target in Operation Crossroads. She survived the first test Able, but was sunk in the second test Baker. She was awarded eight battle stars for her service.
Trivia
Her namesake is the Battle of Saratoga of the American Revolutionary War. She was the fifth of six US ships named Saratoga. Her crew nicknames were Sister Sara and Sara Maru.
