Top Taggers: A Retrospective

Speaking just for myself, I've sometimes held back on fully tagging posts because I didn't want to steal credit, because I like it when people upload my favorite copyrights and want to encourage it, which includes letting them have the credit.

Additionally, there are posts where I don't want to steal credit because they're not the kind of posts I would upload, and I don't really want my name attributed to them in such a way.

Honestly, I think the best way to do this is to implement an opt-out system. If people don't want to feel like they're stealing a post or having their name attributed to something they can opt out of appearing as top tagger on anything they didn't upload.
While I am ambivalent about top tagger in general, I've found that the smiley face/active tag count has been really helpful in motivating me to find a couple more things to tag.

This was my biggest complaint about putting the Top Tagger in the sidebar, and I mentioned as much in topic #14857. I'm glad it's gone now, since there are quite a few posts I've tag gardened that I'd much rather not be associated with otherwise.

Can we maybe add back in uploader name, but if we think that "bragging rights" for uploading something is such a problem (although it affects their own score for total number of uploads regardless, which seems like it's more important), make it only visible to users with approval rights or something? (And I think just flat-out going back to posting "uploader" is fine.)

It means that for every post I'm looking at, I need to go to the tags page to find out who uploaded something, which makes it take twice as long to look at which user might be doing things incorrectly. I tend to leave a relatively large number of @ s and neutral feedbacks to new or infrequent users who aren't sourcing or tagging properly for significant numbers of posts, and so far as I'm concerned, this system just makes it take longer. I don't see how having someone's name on a specific upload really makes a difference. (Again, snipers don't care about individual posts so much as approved post count.) Also, it makes it much easier to spot the self-uploaders who go and make their user name their artist name.

Uploader is already visible to mods for purposes of detecting vandalism, trolling, etc.

I hear your concerns but I have to balance it against all the toxicity that comes out of people fighting over who gets credit. There's already a workaround to find the true uploader info. Frankly, I do want to make it difficult to discover because only egregious examples should trigger the kind of feedback you're posting.

This whole thing reads like an overreaction.
Was "upload sniping" even a thing anymore? At least at the level where we have to conceal several bits of post information from regular users?
I can't say i've seen many complaints in the last 2 years other then the incidental "2-3 people saw the same image and were trying to upload it at the same time". Which will always happen because many of us frequent the same sites.

It may not have been very visible but sniping was still a thing, I've seen it happen several times daily even after Top Tagger was introduced.

Don't think i framed my comment properly. My point wasn't supposed to be so much about sniping, but that i'm generally against concealing what used to be freely available, standard post information from users.

But still, that's sad to hear.

Now that you mentioned it though, will this do anything against stream sniping? I always saw it as more of a "personal pride" thing on this site.
Like it didn't matter that other people saw you as the uploader, but that you know you uploaded a post with 100+ votes/favorites, or whatever.

I'm sure it'll dissuade newer users but, can we quantify if removing the 2 user information items will have any impact on whatever this is trying to resolve?

Updated

I can only tell you that I've slowed down my uploading since sniping became a thing. Without the system automatically merging my tags into an upload, I would spend an extra minute properly tagging characters, only to run into the duplicate page for something that had the minimum artist / copyright tags. And those sat there for up to an hour at a time.

Why bother tagging, much less uploading, when someone will do it to build up their own upload numbers to try and get Builder status? I'm certainly less motivated to tag now, a year later. The Top Tagger thing didn't fix that problem, and neither does the tag counter with the frowning face.

Sniping will still be a thing.
And people will still get mad if they really want to get mad because you still get the duplicate message when uploading.
Just tried it here (Only for the record: I wouldn't seriously upload that)
You may be able to fix that to some extent if you get send to the post page and that your tags are directly merged.

To entirely fix this so-called problem there has to be some sort of automatic uploads...that way you can't blame anyone for "stealing" "your" uploads. And I'm not sure that's what people want.
