What does the "Curated" list imply?

Posted under Bugs & Features

I ask because I am unsure how things qualify as curated, assuming it is even a special category. There was also a pool named Curated at one point. The description mentioned something about a bot or algorithm grabbing posts. Is this the same thing? Am I making stuff up? The wiki explains just about everything one would be afraid to ask, but not the deal with the Curated list.

The curated pool used to be automatically generated from the favorites of people with the "Supervoter" permission, which used to be assigned automatically to users whose favorites were similar enough to those of Albert. When that permission was removed, the pool was deleted as well, and now the curated list is generated from the favorites of people with unrestricted uploads. See here for the relevant code.

The current curated page is essentially posts favorited by people with unrestricted uploads. The idea was that since unrestricted uploaders are people who were hand selected for having good taste, the curated page should be higher quality than the regular popular page. This didn't really turn out to be the case. It turns out that posts that are popular with unrestricted uploaders are mostly the same as posts that are popular with everyone.

In effect, it sounds like the curated page is redundant with the Hot posts page. Maybe we should bring back the supervoter permission, but silently grant it and made it hidden from non-mods and admins.
