Aliasing dota -> defense_of_the_ancients.
Reason: dota is a common abbreviation for defense_of_the_ancients. Besides, a dota_2 tag already exists, so why not an alias for the first game?

The "DOTA" and "Defense of the Ancients" titles are currently in a legal clusterfuck. You can read more about it here, but until something's resolved, it's safer to assume DOTA and Defense of the Ancients are two separate things for now.
At minimum though a shortcut /dota for defense_of_the_ancients should be possible.

Does dota 2 still stand for defense of the ancients, or did they just go with the DOTA title?
AFAIK, this legal battle is over valve's use of DOTA and says nothing what DOTA stands for, so I think its safe to go with defense of the ancients.
No, the legal battle is not over. If it was, it would be all over the gaming news sites. I would rather wait for a definitive answer.

Regardless of what happens with Valve's version, aren't the terms still synonymous (acronym & full title) from the WarCraft III mod?

I didn't say that the legal battle is over, I said that the legal battle is over, as in about, valve's use of the term DOTA, and says nothing of what it means.

Only if you take everything at face value and ignore all the context. Why else would Valve call it "DOTA 2" instead of something else? It's because they're betting on the acronym association to draw fans in without blatantly calling it "Defense of the Ancients 2," which would land them in hotter legal waters.

It's Blizzard's argument against Valve's attempts at trademarking "DOTA."
You're making this overly complicated. "DotA" (the acronym, not DOTA/Dota that Valve uses) should have been aliased to defense_of_the_ancients years ago already.
DOTA and DotA are different. The defense_of_the_ancients_2 -> dota_2 alias is actually wrong since "dota" is not an acronym.

This is what I was trying to get at above. Ignoring the Valve game entirely, the alias still makes sense, and would make sense to be made.
I suppose if a lot of Valve-designed art comes out and there is a compelling reason to disambiguate the old mod from the new game, this could cause problems, but as Se1th says above the (original) acronym and the name are synonymous.

Dota 2 has nothing to do with the original dota beyond the name, the lore and the characters all different.

So tag it dota_2, not defense_of_the_ancients then. I can see an objection to defence_of_the_ancients_2 → dota_2, but that's not what was proposed.
edit: didn't realise "defence" is spelt differently in UK and US english.
This seems safe to do for now, since dota isnt in use. Done.
