Tagging Airplanes

Posted under General

On a whim, I decided to sketch something like "tag group: airplane types". This is how it came out.

I had hoped to do at least the basics in a more comprehensive way, but realized there was no point. For example, we have a bomber tag but nothing like fighter_plane, as far as I know. The tagging of various aircraft seems to aim at brevity rather than consistency or accuracy: for instance, the Mitsubishi A6M Zero is tagged as a6m_zero, while the Mitsubishi J2M Raiden is tagged as mitsubishi_j2m. And although I happen to know that he_111 probably refers to a Heinkel, I think tags that short are not informative enough.

This is an interesting task, but way too big for myself to handle. I might go on adding a few tags to the list every now and then, but wanted to share my observations just in case somebody else was motivated to take a look at the big picture.

are we going to limit this to real world airplanes only? how about those of fictional nature like macross (airplane mode), although they're mecha.

and maybe we could also add a category based on place of origin like japanese, german, british, american planes?

I see no reason not to tag fictional airplanes, if they can be identified. Most of the characters we tag (with notable precision) are fictional, anyway, and vehicles should deserve the same treatment.

When it comes to categories, I am slightly afraid of "tag inflation". I would create accurate plane name tags (e.g. heinkel_he_111), plus a rather limited number of tags for classifying airplanes (e.g. fighter_plane). How many are reasonably needed is up to discussion, of course.

If you mean that the list page should have categories based on place of origin, that sounds great. I.e. Mitsubishi J2M Raiden would be listed under two or three different categories: Fighter Planes, Japanese Planes, World War II Planes.

I believe he does mean the list.

There's a number of ways you could logically sort a list like this but type of plane is probably going to be the easiest if we're going to include fictional planes as it should be more simple to categorize them.

yes, i mean the list of airplanes could contain a country of origin. i think this might be helpful since many airplanes sport their country's roundel/insignia and though taggers might not be familiar with the model, they could easily spot in the list the country they're from.

and yes, a particular airplane tag could be listed in several categories (or headers): fighter, japanese, wwii, etc...
