Says "Kanji Drill" on the cover. Most likely some sort of exercise book for learning kanji. And it seems Seren bought the whole nine miles...

It's only 1000 kanji to learn in 5 months.

All I can say is thank God I'm not under such time restraints.

FREAKING KANJI! WHY MUST YOU BE SO DIFFICULT!

    Still, Chinese is even worse.

Hanzi only has one pronunciation per character in each dialect, which makes it a bit easier. On the other hand, if artists would use furigana, comics would be so much easier.

Agreed. At least I wouldn't have to trawl through WWWJDIC's radical lookup to get the readings. Then again, this way I learned to break down kanji into constituent radicals and link them to meanings, as well as helping me learn to write them (I trace out the kanji with my finger/eyes to count the strokes).

Ah, tell me about it, Kanji really gives me a headache. It's almost as bad as playing Advanced Sudoku.

And rightly so! I've been to the Japanese course of the Hungarian ELTE university, and it was terrible, rushing through about a hundred kanji in a week, then getting tested.

Autodidactic teaching is way better if you have no time constraints. At least that lets you move at your own pace, even if it's usually without the benefit of a professional instructor...

I find that quite enjoyable. Except in the few cases where are radical isn't the radical it looks like. I prefer to use jisho though, if my mouse-based handwriting is just too awful with using Windows' IME.

Dragons have a high intelligence, and thus have a lot of knowledge. Tamaryuu also doesn't let a lot of things slip by her and has a good memory, and since she inherited 1500 years of knowledge from her previous life, she has some oddly ancient knowledge. However, long-lived dragons don't feel the need of short-lived humans, who cram knowledge into a short time. If they have an interest, or if something piques their curiosity, they greedily learn it, and may actually ask humans to teach them. But aside from that, they think that going out of their way to study is a pain and hate it... This is the worldview of dragons in Karindou's world. To put it simply, Tamaryuu is "smart, but hates studying". Her English and French is perfect due to learning it in her past life, but as for Japanese, she can still only read and write hiragana/katakana.

Five minutes later, she came down with a "wisdom fever". "Wisdom fever" is the literal translation; the proper English term would be "teething fever". For reasons still unknown to modern science, infants will sometimes be afflicted with a high fever while teething, and apparently, old Japanese folk medicine held that these fevers were caused by the development of the baby's intelligence. So basically, it's a great big fancy culturally obscure way of saying "her brain overheated"
    'm home.
This way, I'll be right on hand to help with anything you don't understand.
Of course, of course! You're more than welcome!
    Freeze
Welcome baWHAT THE HECK IS THIS MOUNTAIN OF STUFF!?
What've you got in those bags?
First, sit down at the table there.
Is this the right way to write that kanji?
Come to think of it, I still don't know many kanji, either...
    Okay...?
    You're studying, Tamaryu?
    Oh, Ran-tan, welcome.
...or that's the official stance. Really, I'm just watching you so you can't run away.
Well, lookie at that, we've got a visitor! Guess that means we're done for tod--
    Studying kanji...
Never you mind, just call Tamaryu in here.
    What's up, Seren?
    Er--
Seren... are you going to stare at me like that the whole time?
    You wish.
    Unreasonably Forced On her
By next spring, you will have memorized the Jouyou kanji, at least up to the elementary school level.
    Huh?
    Kanji Drill
    WHAAAAAAAAAAAAT!?
Up until now, I've overlooked your distaste for studying, but the situation has changed.
    Eeeeeee! ♥
    Tamaryu, quit screwing around.
Is it okay if I join you?
Almost. It should have the "roof" radical on top, instead.
    ALL OF THEM.
