Some bosses have a peculiar pattern, where they will unleash their most powerful attack at certain times. If you use it you can save yourself from a possible total wipe.
While I understand that much, those bosses were situational to the game it originated in, weren't they? The spell returned in later installments and in the monsters games... but in those, without that telltale pattern to exploit, I really don't see a point.
It's especially apparently in the Monsters games, where attacks aren't patterned at all. It essentially becomes a way to try and coax mons to waste their MP, and any over a certain amount of wisdom will know better and just kill time with physical blows when Ironize is active...
So while it had its use in the original appearance... what's the point of the repeat appearances?
Ironize plus certain abilities that shunt damage to other monsters can be helpful. You can also combine Tatsucall with Ironize in the GBC monster games to avoid all the damage while the difficult to hit Tatsu takes care of everything. Having a 4th monster that can only be hit by hit-all attacks is useful when the main party can't be hurt.
