ESTA is apparently a system that was introduced in 2009. I hadn't even heard of it until I was told about it! :-)

The people in the States told me I had to take care of it 72 hours before traveling, but I input it about 8 hours before, and permission came down in about 5 minutes. Thank God I had a credit card! It cost $14! :-)

By the way, it seems the reason the reservation number didn't come through is that they asked a different person to purchase the ticket, and that person got my email address wrong when they sent the info. I should've confirmed things sooner myself.

You can't take it easy in the United States.

Unfortunately, there must have been timezone problems as well - day in the US would have been night in Japan, and so on so forth.

    Reader-added tags include "...it's another" and "That's siesta, Kogasa-san".

    Today's poll is:

Maybe this will speed you up, Kogasa-san!
    • For now, I've got my eye on you.
    • I'll talk to get you moving.
    • I'll spank your butt.
    • I'll threaten you with a whip.
    • I'll withhold your meals.

That was a close call, wasn't it?

I think the last choice would certainly be the most painful to Kogasauthor.

Wow, a pun that crosses three languages. Good job.

Is that directed at me, Mizuki-san or whoever added the tag on Pixiv?

I didn't really do anything; we just lucked out that the pun involved an English-language acronym (which would be the same in all three countries) and a Spanish word that's reasonably well known among English- and Japanese-speakers.

It's directed mostly at Mizuki-san, but also to whoever added the tag. (I didn't get the pun when I first read it.)

Oh gosh, I haven't posted here in a while. I will totally take the responsibility for this little incident; we were doing a final pre-departure meeting in IRC and somebody more clueful than I mentioned that while Japanese visitors didn't need visas (I knew this) they did need to fill out an ESTA application (didn't know that). Fortunately in most cases it seems to be a fairly simple automated check. I was seriously afraid I'd have to drive down to DC in the morning and start begging with someone at State.

But Mizuki-san made it and it made for a good comic, so it's okay right? *g* I'm sorry...

For the record, we remembered less than 24 hours before his flight departed that even though Japan's a part of the USA's visa waiver program, he still needed to apply for an ESTA.

If he did a strip on the passport, I wouldn't be surprised to see a strip on that.

    welp

We had to fill out a similar application form too in the Philippines before going here to the US [post 9/11]

Heh heh heh...the fact is, my airline ticket reservation number hasn't come through yet...
    Day of departure.
    They repliiiied!!
Sorry we ran late! Here's your reservation number!
By the way, did you finish your ESTA application, Kogasa-san?
    Ta-ta-ta-tak
    If It Isn't One Thing...
    Eh?
    What's that?
    It's a thrill, sure enough!
Whaaat!? Will things still be okay!?
    The day before departure.
    A nap?
Apparently, it's an application to the Electronic System for Travel Authorization that's necessary when you travel to the U.S.
Will I be in time if I start doing it now!??
    Ta-ta-ta-tak
What the hell is that!? I didn't know anything about that!!
