Perhaps it's sad of me to say this, but for some reason I could never imagine Tokiomi ever going to a supermarket and actually buy stuff. He strikes me as the kind of guy who'd send a servant to do all that.

Maybe it's only for Rin's birthday? I really can't imagine Tokiomi going to shopping for mundane items otherwise.

Not really. Rin notes she was surprised he patted her head when he saw her off for the last time.
They also had maid servants before the war, that they sent away. So a shopping excursion is not something you'd likely see with this family. Especially with a intensely research focused father figure.
