Things to keep in mind before you start translating

• Make sure you understand the original completely.
• Don't translate just the parts in katakana, or two random bubbles you happened to understand out of twenty. That's not helpful. Moreover, because Japanese relies almost completely on context, your translation will be wrong if you do that.
• Don't translate things if you can't quite grasp the last panel and/or the punchline. If you can't, it's a good indication you probably didn't grasp the earlier parts either. Again, context is the king.

Okay so basically the problem in this case is that I'm not translating the whole page, well I'm sorry for that.

...the problem here is that if you don't understand the thought bubble in the 3rd panel, you do not understand the joke and can not accurately translate the rest, and actual translators might not fix them if they're already "translated".

lesher didn't make any mistakes in his translation, so I'm not sure why you're whipping out the rulebook on him. Translations are appreciated, incomplete or otherwise. Moreover, he did the responsible thing and only translated what he was sure of instead of guessing at the rest.

So yeah... I hope lesher keeps helping out with translations, even if he can't finish the whole page, because every bit counts.

Wriggle's hair has grown out in panel one as well.

And then retracted back to normal two panels later.

I understand the risk but the idea that someone who is finishing up the translation wouldn't double check what is already there seems silly to me.

Consider that on this very post, the first translator to come in after leshem managed an incorrect grammatical person choice and an unnecessary (and barely grammatical) noun-verb swap in just two lines of dialogue. Danbooru has its good translators, but it also has its bad translators; like driving and investing, translating is best done defensively. (Not that any of this is leshem's fault, of course, but I think it bears saying that check_translation is not as useful as one might hope.)

At any rate, S1eth's second comment gets at what howto:translate's guideline is really trying to avoid here. If you can only translate half of a joke, then by definition, you didn't understand the whole thing, so the absolute best case is that you manage to get it right anyway, in which case the audience is still stuck with half a joke, and anything beyond the best case means that you've just plain gotten it wrong. Preferring incompleteness to inaccuracy is Danbooru policy on the matter.
