ahh it's before, thank you. though i still question why they switch to blood rather than sticking to their regular diet like every other insect.
Apparently they break down the proteins in blood for amino acids that are used to produce their egg yolk proteins. Their normal diet consists of nectar.
As for the reason for switching, I'm just guessing, but it might have been where the species were native the native plants didn't produce nectar with high enough concentrations of the protein they needed or some other reason. There are mosquito species that never need to drink blood, so there are those that can get by without needing to drink blood.
