I think it's more due to her roaming nature and the fact she goes about finding things and in Gensokyo, Muenzuka is a major hotspot of outside things to find. It's said that Rinnosuke occasionally goes item hunting there.

He didn't. That little blurb was said from the perspective of Akyuu and its well established that anything she says is an in-universe subjective account based on gossip and heresay.
In other words it about as valid as Remilia saying she's the daughter of Dracula.
Also, all the print-works are apocryphal in nature so they can't be trusted for exact information at all.
