I wouldn't have gotten the connection without reading these comments, but I think the connection is this:
In the NGE episode where Asuka is introduced, there's an unexpected Angel attack; Shinji has to borrow a plugsuit from Asuka, and we see that the plugsuits have a special function that automatically tightens them to fit the user (which just makes it more obvious that Shinji is wearing a girl's suit.)
