Looks like the map was created with the program for building Ogre maps. (The Steve Jackson Games Ogre... If you know what that is, you might be dating yourself...)

Hell, remembering when hexagons still were pretty much standard in tabletop gaming dates me. I still don't really get why hexagons went out of fashion.

You can't find hexagon graph paper at your local office supply store, but you can probably find square graph paper.

Maybe also because the coordinate system for hexagon is harder than the one for square?

It reminded me more of Steel Panther series games.
