I really think that out of the 3 new girls, Kagerou is the most popular at the moment. That, and the fact that there's more fan-art of her too!
Most of the time that's true. Other times though, people will make a lot of fan art for a character that's either not their fav or not really popular because it's just a fun character to draw.
For instance, my 3 top favs (at the moment) are Flan, Sakuya, and Reisen but if my drawing skills were above grade E most of my artwork would probably be of Hina, Nitori, and Reimu cause I just think it's fun drawing them.

My favorites are Sakuya,Yukari, and Suika. Suika seems like a serious, but fun loving little/big sister type. Yukari has probably one of the most enigmatic back stories ever, and there are tons of stories that could be made from her. I like sakuya because she's hot!

Flan was my key entry into Touhou world. I've played the pc-98 versions and while fun, I soon forgot about them. Then I played the demo for EoSD and it actually held my interest towards the full game but I still wasn't interested in the characters and story. Until I got to that EX stage. Flan got me interested in knowing the games characters and still my all time fav character.
Sakuya is pretty much the same reason as you. Elegant, badass, and hot. Reisen....I really don't know why I like her so much, I just do. Reisen was also the second character I came to love just from the game.
I was thinking about the introduction of these three characters and how, just prior to that, Sakuya's return to playable character status was "the big thing" to the fandom. That excitement all but vanished almost over night.

Ah, Suwako and Koishi takes up place 4 and 5 btw.
I got into this series 3 years ago by looking at Inaba of the earth, and inaba of the moon. nice series overall.

i guess the only thing that would truly shake up the touhou community is for, and fan-boys forgive me for suggesting this, is for ZUN to PERMANENTLY kill off a character in the next game, or comic.

You mean like Mima? That'll troll 'em hard. Then make her a playable character in the next game after that by the power of asspull deus ex.

Yeah, although i have a bad feeling that something tragic might happen to motoori kosuzu in forbidden scrollery. Dunno, but these chapters about her dealing with dangerous books/scroll really give me the feeling that she might actually die in the comic.

He could also start including an occasional (worthwhile) male character. Touhou really needs to desaturate all this estrogen somehow.

Yeah, I'm kinda annoyed with all these all-girl series that don't want to show men because of the fact that fan-boys would think that the male characters are "threatening", and have a chance of sweeping their favorite girl character off their feet, and stealing the girl away forever. Meanwhile, you see men do unspeakable things to the characters in hentai fan-comics, and they are completely okay with that. I for one would like to see a new male character in Touhou, they probably would add more depth to the project overall! Finally, to the fan-boys, relax, ZUN doesn't give a shit about romance, so i doubt, he'll have the female characters swept off their feet, Just look at Rinnosuke, the project seems to be doing just fine with him around, and he would probably need a bro to help him this the estrogen crazy nonsense in Gensyoko!

I say let the chips fall where they may. There is a male character in Idolm@ster as well, and I've yet to have my heart jump out of me and bust the telly out of esoteric envy.
