I remember that my original Moto Droid phone had an app on it made by Motorola to use the flash that way. There are plenty third party apps that do it now though.
I actually got to use my flashlight function for mine recently when there was a blackout at work. It felt odd walking around with that high beam of blindyness,checking on people in the building.
I'd take any of them if I got it for free. The thing is, for any of them there exists a similar device of a different brand I'd prefer with the possible exception of iPod, so I'll pick that one. But not Shuffle.
