You're correct. After the chase, Wyald (the leader of the black dogs) transforms into his apostle-form and kicks the hell out of gutts, only to be stopped by Zodd, who had some unfinished business with wyald, and kills him, since wyald obviously is no match for nosferatu Zodd.
