You know there is something wrong with the rocket heels when even a lecherous scumbag such as myself finds them incredibly stupid.

I’ve never been against fan service-y character designs or fan service by itself but i do believe that a little bit of subtlety can go a long way when it comes to boosting the appeal of things to a whole new level. (On all things design, i think, not only character related issues.) As a consumer i don’t really mind if the designs are all about the fan service, but at least try to pretend and make me believe it isn’t. Fan service doesn’t mean it has to be blatant or dull because if there’s skin showing people won’t care. The human mind is very, very powerful and sometimes things left to imagination can provoke a stronger response that the stuff we see. This is what i mean by subtlety as someone who has spent an unhealthy amount of time drawing armored characters out of said armors to appease the wild imaginations of strangers across the internet. Subtlety is what makes people go nuts and start drawing those bizarre doujins.

So, uh, rant aside. I wanted to draw Samus but apparently ended up drawing a blonde Mega Man. I’m sorry

Excellent picture, but I am truly baffled at how selective this uproar has been. Raiden has cybernetic high heels that function because nanomachines, son. Chel has long fall boots that look alot like high heel boots yet function because Cave Johnson says so. Samus gets rocket boots with high heels that nonetheless are combat functional because it's the future and people come down on them. I'm sorry, but this argument is unfair.

As for the aesthetics, I think the boots draw the eye nicely across Samus' full form (and I mean that from a design stand-point, not a perverted stand-point). I think the design is striking and I personally want to wear a pair. Obviously something is in them that lets you do crazy stuff without breaking your ankles, so I'm all for it.

It's just the latest in a long line of changes to how Samus is portrayed. I think Other M was the breaking point for many fans of the series, and the high heels is seen by them as a sort of doubling down on that when they would rather see Nintendo backpedaling.

I know plenty of people who felt the visual changes from Metroid Prime to Fusion were a poor decision as well.

Also Raiden has high heels cause Kojima is a weirdo.

Raiden's a bit of a bad example, since he's kinda on both ends at the same time. Samus had always been a character that felt like she should be taken seriously, while Raiden (admit it!) is a bit of a joke character...a super-badass gunman that just kinda forgot he was a super-badass gunman and so became a fluffy newbie-type who had to repeat every statement he heard as a question, and upon realizing he was a super-badass gunman he becomes a cyborg with high heels based around the sword of the dead mother of the girl he's trying to take care of from behind the scenes. He's a bit of a fruit, but that was built into his character development. Having not seen a any of the games past MGS4, I'd find the most comparable possibility in Sunny, where she's a little stereotypically feminine with her love for cooking and her hair flower but also the "strong" side represented by her big ol' boots, cargo shorts, and her desire to be like her mom; then another game or two roll along and suddenly she's Kaylee. I'm guessing a few people would be upset.Handily I see from the wiki that that scenario didn't come to pass.
