    It's kinda a grey area though, since while the transformers toys were made in japan it was under a different name without the autobot and deceptacon concept. Hasbro brought them to the west and gave them the name transformers and their personalities. So while kinda originating in east it was created in the west.

    Despite it was created in the west but most of G1 generation was design by Japane artist who work with them. Thus you can see many similiar between G1 generation Transformers series cartoon with Japanese giant super robot series.
