In hindsight (and a good couple years later), given that we'd never actually SEEN the fights between him and Ashigara, perhaps this IS what Ashigara's been seeing during their sparring matches; up until this point, the 'put a sword in his hands' sorta trait was largely informed, wasn't it?

I don't think she could see his face through the helmet and mask. She only got his killing intent.
