    Trivia: here in New England, "to whale" (usually followed by "on") is also a verb meaning "to hit hard," as in, "If (mechanical contraption) is stuck, get a hammer and whale on it a few times."

    Almost certainly not what the artist had in mind? But... oddly apt.

    I always thought that definition's word didn't have an H in it. Mr. Dictionary proves me wrong again.
